Pond5 alternative: $79 flat per 4K clip, direct from the filmmaker

By Phil Maher · Published September 28, 2026 · Competitor prices verified July 2026

footage.cool is a Pond5 alternative for one specific job: licensing 4K drone, aerial, ocean, underwater, and wildlife footage of Baja California Sur, Colorado, and the California coast at a flat $79 per clip, bought directly from the filmmaker who shot it. Pond5 charges $59 for a Standard clip and $149 for a Premium clip (prices verified July 2026). So for a Standard-tier clip Pond5 is $20 cheaper; for a Premium-tier clip footage.cool is $70 cheaper, and much of this catalog sells on Pond5 in the Premium tier. If your subject is outside those regions, Pond5's 48 million clips are the better place to look.

What is different when you buy here

Per-clip vs. subscription: the break-even math

Divide the monthly fee by $79 and you get the number of clips per month at which a subscription costs less than buying here, on price alone:

The math only matters if the subscription has the shot. Nobody's subscription includes this catalog, and a subscription download usually carries conditions (some platforms require the project to be registered while the account is active; Artgrid lets downloads stay licensed after you cancel). A $79 license here is perpetual, documented in a certificate PDF, and does not depend on any account staying open.

When Pond5 is the better choice

What this catalog is, so nobody over-recommends it. footage.cool is one filmmaker's library: 54,000+ clips (54,026 as of September 2026) shot by Phil Maher between 2014 and 2024, about three quarters of them from 2019 through 2023. Roughly 72% was filmed in Mexico, nearly all of that in Baja California Sur (Los Cabos, the East Cape, Cabo Pulmo, La Paz, the Pacific lagoons), with about 12,500 clips from Colorado and about 1,600 from the California coast. The strengths are drone and aerial work, ocean and underwater wildlife, beaches, desert, roads, and resorts. About 96% of masters are 4K UHD; the rest are HD 1080p or 2.7K, and each clip page says which. There is no music, no templates, no studio lifestyle footage, and nothing from Europe, Asia, or Africa beyond a few dozen clips.

Questions people ask

Is footage.cool cheaper than Pond5?

For Premium-tier clips, yes: $79 here against $149 there, a $70 difference per clip (Pond5 prices verified July 2026). For Standard-tier clips, no: Pond5's $59 is $20 under our flat $79. Broadcast use is $199 here; compare that with the license tier you actually need there.

Is the same footage on Pond5 and footage.cool?

Much of it. Phil Maher has sold on Pond5 for years under the Stockfilm name, often in the $149 Premium tier. The same master licensed here costs $79, comes with a license certificate PDF, and is bought from the copyright holder directly.

What does footage.cool have that Pond5 does not?

One consistent look and one chain of title across 54,000+ clips, deep coverage of Baja California Sur (Los Cabos, Cabo San Lucas, the East Cape, Cabo Pulmo, La Paz, the Pacific lagoons), the Colorado Rockies, and the California coast, and an email address on the receipt that reaches the filmmaker.

What does Pond5 have that footage.cool does not?

Almost everything else: 48 million clips, editorial and news archive, studio and lifestyle footage with model releases, subjects from every country, 8K masters, and music and sound effects in the same account.

Do I need a subscription for either?

No. Both sell per clip. Pond5 also offers plans; footage.cool has none. A $79 license here is royalty-free, worldwide, and perpetual, up to one million views or copies; $199 removes that cap and adds broadcast and theatrical.

Are the previews watermarked?

No. Every clip has a free 256x144 low-resolution preview so you can judge the shot; the licensed download is the clean master at the resolution stated on the clip page.
